The iconic Howard Smith Wharves is set to undergo a dramatic transformation with the recently unveiled redevelopment plans from the Artemus Group. In a move that promises to redefine Brisbane's waterfront, the group has submitted a code-assessable Development Application (DA), signaling the next stage of innovation for this vibrant riverside precinct. With a focus on enhancing public spaces, sustainability, and integrating Brisbane's natural beauty, this redevelopment aims to offer a new level of urban experience.
One of the key features of the proposal is a stunning 77-room, woolstore-inspired hotel that will rise nine storeys above the riverfront. Designed to blend seamlessly with the industrial heritage of the area, this hotel will serve as both a nod to the past and a vision for the future. In addition to its luxurious accommodations, the hotel will feature ground-floor retail spaces and a theatre/music hall, replacing the existing Felons Barrel Hall. The two-level performance space is set to become a cultural hotspot for live entertainment, offering a unique fusion of art, music, and hospitality.
Perhaps one of the most exciting aspects of the redevelopment is the planned overwater pool deck, complete with a bar and dining precinct. The pool, stretching out over the Brisbane River, will offer panoramic views of the city skyline and Story Bridge, creating a one-of-a-kind destination for both locals and tourists. The surrounding dining precinct will provide an immersive culinary experience, allowing visitors to enjoy world-class food and drinks with unparalleled views.
The historic Bougainvillea House is also set to receive a makeover. Under the new plans, this iconic structure will be transformed into a two-storey, landscaped building, incorporating modern amenities while preserving its original charm. This revitalization aims to create a more inviting and functional space for visitors, ensuring that Bougainvillea House remains a key feature of the precinct for years to come.
In line with Brisbane's commitment to creating accessible, green urban spaces, the redevelopment will also include significant improvements to public access and connectivity. Two new cliff lifts will provide easy access from the cliffs above to the waterfront, while additional open spaces, parklands, and pathways will make the area more inviting for pedestrians. The enhanced riverfront boardwalks will align with Brisbane’s “Buildings That Breathe” guidelines, ensuring that the development promotes sustainability and environmental harmony.
Artemus Group’s vision goes beyond just development; it’s about creating a space that embodies Brisbane’s cultural heritage while meeting the needs of a modern, eco-conscious city. By incorporating sustainable innovations and aligning with the city's green-building standards, the redevelopment of Howard Smith Wharves will be a blueprint for how urban spaces can enhance both public life and environmental stewardship.
The Howard Smith Wharves Redevelopment 2.0 represents more than just a facelift for the waterfront—it’s a reimagining of what this iconic location can offer. With a mix of luxury, culture, public spaces, and sustainable design, the Artemus Group is poised to transform this riverside precinct into a world-class destination that reflects the heart and soul of Brisbane.
The project not only showcases innovation in design and construction but also strengthens the connection between the city's past and its vision for the future. As plans move forward, Brisbane residents and visitors alike can look forward to a vibrant, redefined waterfront experience.
